Babyface

Museum Volunteer to James: Are you an intern?

Ken to Volunteer: He's in his mid-forties!

Volunteer to Ken: No, he's got to be in his twenties!

James: Well actually, I'm forty.

Ken: He's been working for the department for almost twenty years!

Volunteer to James: You look so young!

James: You are not the first person to say that.

Mistaken Identities

Alternate Post Title: I Used to be a Blond

Alternate Alternate Post Title: A Laugh at My Expense

I really need to pay closer attention to what I am doing in the kitchen.

I like to make homemade chocolate pudding occasionally. Recently while stirring my pudding on the stovetop, the mixture started to foam up when it got hot rather than thickening. I quickly removed the saucepan from the burner, perplexed at the crazy pudding. I looked around at the ingredients on the counter, realizing then that I had grabbed the wrong yellow box and had mixed in baking soda rather than cornstarch.

I know...DUH!

This morning, I swept the high traffic areas of the floors and, noticing some sticky spots, I grabbed the Bona spray floor cleaner to spot-mop. After mopping, I wondered at the strange smell in the kitchen and noticed that my feet were sticking to the mopped areas. I looked up at the counter, and got a closer look at the white spray bottle that I had grabbed: "Stainless Steel Magic" (No, we don't have stainless steel flooring.) The bottle also read, "Gently Polishes!" I'm thankful for the gentle part and that it did not take the finish off of the wood floor.

Double Duh!

If you scan your face and send it to your daughter, she will post it on her blog.

Thanks Dad! And thanks for scanning in pictures that I want for Grandma's 90th Birthday slide show!

P.S. I think I saw a nose print on one of the pictures. You might want to clean your scanner. Thanks again! :)

Don't Have a Cow, Man!

cowLast night, while looking at a picture of cows, Logan started "mooing" then said, "Have it? Have a cow?"

James and I cracked up which Logan enjoyed so that he kept repeating, "Have a cow!" and laughing at his own "joke".

I'm Awake Now

Just a little bit ago, I went to lie down on the couch for a short "power nap" before starting some school planning. I picked up a folder labeled "Princess Stories" lying on the couch, and curious as to its contents, I opened it, hoping to read a good nap-time story. The story caught me off guard, sleepiness dissipating as I laughed to the point of tears. I must share with you the story of...

"The Very Horrible Girl Fairy"
by Sophie

There was once a very bad fairy who was turned into a plain girl for her punishment. Some people took her into their house for a party, but they got black eyes, so they decided not to be her friends. (Now, this is a very short story, so it is about to end.) The people took her and threw her into a lake, and that was the end of her. They were put in jail for doing that, and they so-called lived happily ever after, but they were so miserable that they died later.

Classic Sophism

Yeah, I've really been into blogging lately...

But, I have to at least blog this:

While putting away groceries Sophie asked, "Did you buy any Cannibal's Tomato Soup?"

Before I forget...

Recently James held an impromptu supper time spelling bee with the kids just for fun:

"Okay kids, who can spell sewer?" (Don't ask me why that particular word popped into his head while we were eating!)

Sophie: "I can! I can!" pausing to spell into her hand, then saying out loud "S...T...I....N...K...Y."

We cried with laughter.

"Home James"

As I said to the kids as they went to bed last night, "It is always better when Daddy is home." James was gone for work for three days this week, and we sure are glad that he is home. The days get long without adult reinforcement come evening...especially when there is no chocolate in the house to speak of (well at least not of the gluten-free, dairy-free variety.) James came back and brought chocolate, the dear man.

I'm not sure of the point, but in some meeting that he attended, someone shared a video called "Herding Cats" which we looked up on YouTube. Here it is for your viewing enjoyment:

What Does the Logan Say?

While we read an animal board book, Logan came up with his own signature sound:

"Any Reasonable Person"

James sent me the following newspaper clipping image by email today.

This reminds me of an interview in our city newspaper where the president of the local chapter of the Federation of Republican Woman was asked to name her favorite American president. There in black-and-white, her answer read "Benjamin Franklin".

Finally, someone posted this link on a homeschool discussion board today.

Out of the Mouths of Boys

Overheard during Latin today:

"Barbie is a derivative of barbarus (barbarian), because barbies are so uncivilized and rude!" (Matthew, defender of all things boyish)

New Definition of Insanity

The best guide to homeschooling that I own is the book The Well-Trained Mind by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. My kids have heard me talk about the book to others and have seen the book around the house. This week for history we have been reading the chapter about "The First Russians" in The Story of the World. Part of the chapter tells about Ivan the Terrible going mad. Matthew told me with a chuckle that Ivan had "well-trained mind problems".
