I took this picture of Sophie in January of 2006 when she began taking Suzuki cello lessons. She posed with my full size cello and her 1/8th size cello. Sophie took lessons for a year and progressed quickly through the first Suzuki book ~ a little too quickly for my taste. I had a nagging sense that catching up to the other kids her age in the Suzuki group took precedence over a solid foundation in technique.
When I got sick last year, cello lessons ceased for a time. When I felt up to adding activities back in to our schedule, Sophie seemed to have lost interest in cello. However, in recent months, she began expressing interest in starting lessons again.
Last week, James and I traded in Sophie's cello for a 1/4 size instrument, and I took Sophie to her first lesson with a new teacher. We both had a good first impression of the teacher.
Hopefully Sophie is off to a more solid start!

I can understand your concerns. We have tried two violin teachers: one teacher's students made no progress year after year - they always played the same pieces for the end of term concert. Their next teacher would cancel one out of three lessons by text message - often only ten minutes before the lesson. She texted us to say one day that there would be no more lessons. This is a teacher who was extremely strict with the children.
I hope, when we are settled after travelling, that we can find a good teacher this time round.

oh wow, the cello is such a beautiful, mellow sounding instrument! Our neighbor plays, and we love listening in on a warm evening with our windows open. My oldest dd plays the violin.

They are so big compared to her! I wish my kids would have stuck with violin! My girls played for 1 year... also Suzuki method... RyLee was 4 and Christian was about 8 I think...

We struggle with having the teacher go slow enough to really get enough attention to detail for my tastes too. (Compounded by my lack of musical ability to fine tune the details at home).
